Do you need an electrician to install a window air conditioner?

A basic plug-in window or wall box unit that connects to a standard 10-amp power point does not require a licensed electrician for the physical mounting work.

A competent handyperson can generally handle cutting the opening and securing the unit following the manufacturer’s instructions. However, if there is no suitable power point near the installation location, you will need a licensed electrician to install one.

Larger window units may also require a dedicated 15-amp power point rather than a standard outlet, which again means calling in an electrician. As with any electrical work in Australia, any new circuits or power points must be installed by a licensed professional and covered by a certificate of compliance.

Blue Mountains Air can advise whether your existing power setup is suitable or whether additional electrical work will be needed.
