Energy Saving Scheme

Understanding the Energy Savings Scheme (ESS) in NSW

The Energy Savings Scheme (ESS) is a pivotal program aimed at
promoting energy efficiency across New South Wales (NSW). This initiative offers financial incentives to both households and businesses to encourage the adoption of energy-efficient equipment and practices.

Here’s a comprehensive overview of the ESS and its recent updates.

What is the Energy Savings Scheme?

The ESS is designed to help reduce energy consumption and greenhouse
gas emissions in NSW. By providing financial incentives, the scheme
supports the installation of energy-efficient equipment, making it more
affordable for participants to upgrade their facilities. Since its inception in 2009, the ESS has been instrumental in driving substantial energy savings and environmental benefits.

Achievements and Impact

As of December 2022, the ESS has facilitated projects that are projected to save 48,000 GWh of energy by 2033. These efforts have already contributed to a reduction of 23 megatonnes of greenhouse gas emissions, highlighting the scheme’s significant positive impact on the environment.

Updates to the ESS Rules

The latest ESS Rule, which came into effect on June 19, 2024, introduces several important changes:

Incentives for Refrigerated Cabinets: Adjustments have been made to the incentives offered for upgrading to energy-efficient refrigerated cabinets.

Methodologies for Air Conditioners and Hot Water Systems: The rules now include updated methodologies for calculating energy savings from upgrades to air conditioners and hot water systems.

These updates are designed to refine the program, ensuring it continues to effectively support energy-saving projects and adapts to
new technologies and market conditions.

Transition Arrangements

To ensure a smooth transition, the ESS allows for the use of the previous rule until June 19, 2024. This flexibility helps participants and service providers adapt to the new guidelines without disrupting ongoing projects.

Stakeholder Engagement and Resources

The NSW Environment website offers a platform for stakeholders to engage with the ESS. Through consultations and regular updates, participants can stay informed about the latest developments and participate in discussions that shape the future of energy-saving initiatives in NSW. The website also provides valuable resources to help implement energy-saving upgrades, whether in residential or commercial settings.

The ESS continues to play a crucial role in promoting energy efficiency and reducing environmental impact in NSW. With ongoing updates and a commitment to stakeholder engagement, the scheme remains a vital tool for achieving a more sustainable and energy-efficient future. Whether you are a homeowner or a business, participating in the ESS can provide financial benefits while contributing to broader environmental goals.
